Yamakataya runs the Yamakataya department store in central Kagoshima and heads a group of department stores that also trades in Satsumasendai, Kirishima and Miyazaki. In May 2024 its lenders approved a turnaround plan under Japan's out-of-court business-revitalisation (ADR) procedure. In the year to February 2026 net sales were ¥14.8bn and operating profit ¥110m; special gains turned a ¥275m recurring loss into net income of ¥1.75bn.
