floortok is an independent publication covering Japan's retail and luxury market. This policy sets out how we source, report, attribute and correct our work, and how we handle images and third-party material.
First-hand sourcing
We write only from first-hand sources: a company's own filings and press releases, official brand and maison newsrooms, and government and industry statistics — announcements made first-hand by the organisations concerned. Where a fact cannot be traced to a primary source, we do not publish it.
Attribution and quotation
We report facts with clear attribution — "according to", "the company said", "X announced" — and we do not reproduce a source's wording. Where we quote, we keep it brief, place it in quotation marks, and attribute it.
Trade press is link-only
When another outlet has reported a story, we link to their coverage rather than reproduce it. We do not lift text or images from trade-press or news articles; if we want to report the underlying news, we go to the original company announcement and report from there.
Images and photographs
We publish a third party's photograph only when it comes from that company's own press materials, is offered for media use, and we can meet the stated terms: used whole and unaltered, credited as requested, and only alongside our own reporting — never in advertising. We do not take images from trade-press or news sites. Where we cannot confirm an image's reuse terms, we run our own illustration instead.
Illustrations and production tools
Article illustrations are made by floortok in a consistent house style. We use software tools, including AI assistance, to help produce illustrations and to translate between English and Japanese; editorial judgement, sourcing and the words remain ours.
Corrections
If we get something wrong, we correct it. Please write to us at hello@floortok.com and we will review and update the piece.
Independence and conflicts
floortok is independent and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by any brand, retailer, department store or mall named on the site. We do not accept payment to cover, favour, or omit a story.
