Daimaru Umeda moves its main entrance to a bigger beauty floor in a renovation running to 2030
Daimaru Matsuzakaya is rebuilding its flagship Osaka store floor by floor through 2030, moving the entrance itself to a fourth-floor beauty hall 1.5 times its current size -- a bet that station footfall, not street frontage, is now Umeda's real draw.

Daimaru Matsuzakaya Department Stores said on October 13 that it will renovate Daimaru Umeda, its flagship Osaka store, floor by floor over the next several years under a new concept it calls "Atelier Future" (アトリエ・フューチャー), targeting a grand opening around spring 2030.
The first phase covers the 4th, 5th and 9th floors and opens in spring 2027, the company said, following the basement food-floor renewal that began in March 2026. Daimaru Matsuzakaya has not yet named the brands moving in or detailed the new floors' interior design -- it says that will follow around January to February 2027 -- but it did set out what each floor is for.
The biggest change is at the fourth floor, which becomes both the store's new main entrance and its largest beauty hall. Daimaru Umeda's cosmetics department is relocating there from the second floor and expanding to about 1.5 times its current size, adding luxury cosmetics flagship counters, expanded beauty and wellness services including a treatment "cabin", and more fashion-accessory and cafe space aimed at younger shoppers. The company said the floor was chosen as the new entrance because of its direct connection to JR Osaka Station, where footfall is already highest -- in a district where several rival department stores cluster around the same station.
The fifth floor, "Global Fashion," becomes a gender-free fashion floor anchored by a high-end select shop and rounded out with creator and street brands plus a cafe from a Kansai operator. The ninth floor, "Cross Culture," turns over to entertainment built around K-pop, VTuber and 2.5D (stage-adaptation) content, including what the company describes as a first-of-its-kind shop in western Japan run with major content-rights holders; the existing Daimaru Museum is being expanded into a larger combined exhibition, merchandise and event hall.
Moving the entrance away from street level to a fourth-floor beauty hall is the structural bet here. Department stores have traditionally treated ground-floor cosmetics as the draw that pulls shoppers in off the street; Daimaru is betting instead that the real traffic now arrives through the station concourse, and that a beauty floor half again its current size can anchor an entrance on its own. Pairing that with a content-driven floor built for K-pop and VTuber fans is a reach for a younger audience that a conventional fashion or homeware floor would not bring in.
Whether that bet pays off will be legible from the next milestone, not this one: the brand list due around January to February 2027 is where Daimaru either lands the "luxury cosmetics flagship" language with recognisable names or doesn't.
