J. Front steps off its own floor to run Nagoya's Sakae district for Christmas
J. Front Retailing is putting its name behind a six-week Christmas programme that spans an entire Nagoya shopping district -- Matsuzakaya Nagoya, Nagoya PARCO and HAERA together -- rather than confining the push to its own store, right down to an attempt to set a record for the number of people exchanging handmade ornaments at once.

J. Front Retailing said it will lead "SAKAE Christmas Memories 2026," a programme running November 14 to December 25 across Nagoya's Sakae shopping district, anchored by Matsuzakaya Nagoya, Nagoya PARCO and HAERA together with local businesses, cultural institutions, schools and Nagoya City, according to a company release. The stated goal is to make the season a recurring winter tradition for the district rather than a one-store event.
The programme opens with a ceremony at Hisaya-odori Park on the evening of November 14, lighting the Chubu Electric Power MIRAI TOWER with local residents taking part. Its centrepiece is an ornament exchange on December 19 at Matsuzakaya Nagoya, for which organisers say they will attempt to set a record for the number of participants, though which body would certify it is still undecided; the handmade ornaments are made from upcycled offcuts donated by Aichi manufacturers -- automotive parts and shoe leather among them -- in weekend workshops run with Nagoya Zokei University students from November 28 to December 13. Street music parades, running December 5, 6, 13, 20 and 24, move performers between Matsuzakaya Nagoya, the Chunichi Building and the area around the tower.
The scale is the point: a Japanese department-store operator organising street-level programming across a whole district, not just its own selling floor, is a bet that footfall built around a neighbourhood identity -- rather than one store's name -- pulls harder in a season when every mall and department store runs some version of the same illumination-and-gift-fair script. It is also the second area-wide placemaking push J. Front has running this quarter: Daimaru Kobe is co-running a similar, smaller social experiment outside its own doors in the former foreign settlement district in early November.
