JR East to rebuild Musashisakai station with a retail floor and an eight-storey hotel wing
JR East will start building a new Musashisakai station complex in October, pairing a single retail floor with an eight-storey hotel wing — the latest instance of the ekinaka retail-and-hotel format the railway keeps building into its Tokyo commuter stations rather than developing separately nearby.

East Japan Railway Company (JR East) said it will start construction in October 2026 on a new station building directly connected to Musashisakai Station on the Chuo Line, adding a ground-floor retail zone and a hotel wing at the Tokyo commuter stop, according to a release dated September 30.
The building, tentatively named the Musashisakai Station East Building, will carry community-focused retail on its first floor, including a relocated branch of nonowa Musashisakai EAST, run by JR Chuo Line Community Design Co., the JR East group company that already operates the station's shops. Floors two through nine will form a new wing of the JR East Hotel Mets Musashisakai, connected to the existing hotel and operated by Nihon Hotel Co. JR East said the project is also meant to create space for community events, though it disclosed neither a total floor area nor a completion date.
JR East's core business model pairs small, daily-use retail with budget-business hotel rooms directly inside its stations rather than building either one as a standalone project nearby, and Musashisakai fits that pattern rather than breaking it. What stands out here is the scale of the hotel addition relative to the retail floor: a full eight-storey wing against a single ground floor of shops suggests JR East is reading demand at this stop as room nights first, incremental shopping second — a read that will only be testable once the company discloses how much floor space either use actually gets.
