LAVA adds another station-side Pilates studio in Kyoto
A machine-Pilates studio filling a small unit three minutes from a private-rail station in Kyoto is the retail-real-estate story: this is the format now taking the compact commercial space department stores no longer compete for.

LAVA International will open a machine-Pilates studio, "Rintosull Nishiin," on 1 November on the first floor of the Fuji Building in Ukyo-ku, Kyoto, three minutes' walk from Hankyu Railway's Nishiin Station and also reachable from Keifuku Electric Railway's Saiin Station, the company said. It is the latest addition to Rintosull, LAVA's machine-Pilates format, which the company said had more than 260 locations nationwide as of September.
LAVA International, founded in 1990 and based in Tokyo's Minato ward, said it separately runs more than 700 hot-yoga studios under the LAVA brand and has served more than three million clients across its business to date. The new Kyoto studio will offer more than 25 programme types in 30-, 45- and 50-minute lesson lengths. The company cited a survey of 1,091 members in which 96.9% reported experiencing results — a company-commissioned figure, not an independently verified one. LAVA will run free trial lessons from 11 to 31 October and an introductory offer of an unlimited plan at ¥1,980 a month for the first three months, with the registration fee waived.
The location is the point as much as the studio. Machine-Pilates operators such as Rintosull have spent the past few years filling exactly the kind of compact, station-adjacent commercial units — a single floor of a small building steps from a private-rail platform — that department stores and shopping centres have largely stopped fighting for. That real estate doesn't need department-store-scale footfall to work; it needs a catchment of regular, appointment-based visits, which is precisely what a wellness subscription model is built to deliver.
With more than 260 Rintosull locations already open, the number to watch is less this one studio than the pace of the rollout — how much further LAVA can push a hot-yoga customer base into machine Pilates before the format's easy real estate runs out.
