PPIH crosses 1,045 stores as it completes its Toys"R"Us Japan takeover

Pan Pacific International Holdings has taken over the 154 stores run by Japan Toys"R"Us, lifting its group total to 1,045 stores in Japan and abroad -- what PPIH itself calls a long-cherished 1,000-store milestone, and the latest in a string of acquisitions since Don Quijote's first store opened in 1989.

Pan Pacific International Holdings Inc. (パン・パシフィック・インターナショナルホールディングス, PPIH), the operator of Don Quijote, said the 154 stores run nationwide by Japan Toys"R"Us Co., Ltd. (日本トイザらス株式会社) joined the PPIH group following a business transfer executed on October 30. Combined with PPIH's existing 891 domestic and overseas stores, the group's total reached 1,045 stores, which PPIH's own November 2 announcement called passing its "long-cherished" 1,000-store mark.

PPIH traces its growth to the first Don Quijote store, which opened in Fuchu, Tokyo, in March 1989. Since then the group has added stores both organically, under what it calls an individual-store merchandising approach, and through acquisitions -- taking in general-merchandise chain Nagasakiya, Uny's Apita and Piago supermarkets, and, as recently as July this year, the 98-store Olympic supermarket group. Toys"R"Us and its sister brand Babies"R"Us now form a fourth distinct banner inside the group, alongside its discount stores, its Uny-descended supermarket formats and its overseas operations, according to PPIH.

As of November 2026, PPIH's domestic network of 924 stores breaks down as 549 under its discount and small-format banners (Don Quijote 302, MEGA Don Quijote 146, MEGA Don Quijote UNY/Don Quijote UNY 62, and 39 stores under smaller discount banners), 221 under its Uny-descended and newer formats (Apita/Piago 123, Robin Hood 5, Olympic 93), and the newly added 154 Toys"R"Us and Babies"R"Us stores. Its 121 overseas stores split between 78 in North America -- California, Hawaii and Guam -- and 43 in Asia, including Singapore, Hong Kong and Thailand, operating under banners such as DON DON DONKI, Gelson's, MARUKAI/TOKYO CENTRAL and TIMES, PPIH said.

The Toys"R"Us integration is a Product-line move as much as a store-count one: rather than opening its own toy and baby-goods format, PPIH has bought a specialist chain wholesale, the same pattern it used with Nagasakiya, Uny and Olympic. For a group that already sells toys and children's goods inside its discount stores, folding in a dedicated 154-store chain -- plus its online store, which PPIH's release also notes -- gives it a fourth leg to stand on alongside discount retail, supermarkets and its overseas business, rather than leaving toys as just a category on Don Quijote's shelves. PPIH's release gives no terms for the transfer and no word on whether Toys"R"Us stores will keep their branding, be converted, or be consolidated with nearby PPIH formats.
