Tokyo Base sets up its first dedicated overseas subsidiary, in Taiwan

Tokyo Base, the Tokyo-listed group behind Studious and United Tokyo, has formed its first dedicated overseas subsidiary in Taiwan, with stores planned within the year — a more formal step than the sister-brand pop-in it tried in Seoul earlier this summer.

Tokyo Base Co., Ltd., the Tokyo-listed operator of the Studious, United Tokyo and Japan Edition select-shop chains, has established a subsidiary in Taiwan — its first dedicated overseas entity — according to a stock-exchange disclosure dated 31 July. The filing sets out plans to open stores in Taiwan within the coming year.

The move follows a lighter-touch overseas push earlier this year: Tokyo Base's United Tokyo banner opened its first store in Seoul in June, according to the company's own newsroom, selling Japan-made apparel through what was, at the time, a single flagship rather than a locally incorporated operation. A dedicated Taiwan subsidiary is a different order of commitment — a standing legal entity built to run multiple stores, not a one-off opening.

For a retailer that has grown almost entirely on domestic select-shop real estate, formalising an overseas subsidiary is the more telling signal than the store count itself: it is the structure a company builds when it expects to keep opening, not just test the water once. Whether Taiwan becomes a template Tokyo Base repeats elsewhere in Asia, or stays a single market, will show up in the next round of disclosures long before it shows up in same-store sales.
