Uniqlo's Japan sales bounce back in July, up 4.3% as summer heat revives demand

Uniqlo Japan's same-store sales swung from a steep June slump to a 4.3% gain in July, Fast Retailing said, as persistent summer heat revived demand for its warm-weather range even as shopper traffic slipped.

Uniqlo's directly run stores in Japan posted same-store sales up 4.3% year on year in July, including online sales, Fast Retailing said in its monthly sales bulletin — a sharp reversal from June, when the same measure fell roughly 14% as unseasonably cool weather froze summer buying.

Total sales across Uniqlo's own stores and online, a broader measure that also counts new stores, rose 5.0% in July, the company said. At existing stores, average purchase price rose 4.5% even as customer traffic slipped 0.2% on the year. Fast Retailing said the rebound came from strong sales of new products alongside brisk demand for summer items once persistently hot weather set in from the middle of the month. The bulletin also recorded one Uniqlo store opening and three closures for the period.

The swing from a double-digit June slump to a solid July gain is less a story about Uniqlo's assortment than about the weather itself: this fiscal year's same-store sales have swung from a strong spring, to June's washout, to July's heat-driven rebound, tracking the thermometer more than anything the retailer has changed on the floor. That volatility is a live test of how much of Japan's apparel demand this summer is simply weather deferred rather than lost — and, with July's purchase price again outpacing store traffic, whether Uniqlo's pricing power holds if a cooler August brings the swings back the other way.
