Uniqlo Japan's same-store sales jump 10.8% in September as a cold snap pulls in autumn buying
Fast Retailing's own September sales bulletin shows Uniqlo's Japan same-store sales up 10.8% year on year — the earliest, clearest read on how domestic apparel spending is shaping up this autumn, and a reminder of how exposed every apparel floor in the country is to the same shift in temperature.

Fast Retailing said Uniqlo's directly run Japan stores posted a 10.8 per cent year-on-year rise in same-store sales, including online, in September, with total sales across all its Japan-operated stores up 9.9 per cent, according to its monthly sales bulletin dated October 2.
The gain came despite fewer shoppers walking in, not more. Among Uniqlo's 751 same stores, customer numbers fell 0.5 per cent year on year even as average purchase value rose 11.3 per cent, the bulletin showed; across the group's full 771 Japan-operated stores, customer numbers were down 1.3 per cent and average purchase was up 11.4 per cent. September's growth, in other words, was built almost entirely on shoppers spending more each visit, not more people visiting.
Fast Retailing attributed the swing to a drop in temperature that pulled in demand for autumn and winter ranges, generating what it called double-digit same-store growth for the month. The bulletin also noted that three stores in Kumamoto prefecture, closed for more than a week after the July 28 earthquake, and one store in Chiba prefecture, closed after August 13 heavy rainfall, were excluded from the same-store calculation. The company opened four Uniqlo stores and closed five during the month; on September 25 it reopened its renovated and extended Uniqlo Arcakit Kinshicho store in Japan as an "extra-large" format, the same week it opened its first Cambridge, UK store and a sixth Manhattan location.
For Japan's largest apparel retailer, a same-store figure like this is the earliest public read on how domestic shoppers are responding to the season, and the mechanics behind it matter as much as the headline number: with footfall still falling, Uniqlo's growth rests on shoppers buying more per visit rather than more people coming through the door — a dynamic every department-store and mall apparel floor in the country is exposed to on the same week's weather swing. The Kinshicho renovation, timed alongside new flagships in the UK and the US, also points to a group currently investing in bigger-format stores over net new openings, in Japan as much as abroad.
Whether September's pace holds depends on whether the early cold snap continues into October, or whether this was simply demand released the moment temperatures dropped.
