United Arrows' August sales jump 8.4% as shopper traffic reverses course

United Arrows' existing-store sales rose 8.4% in August as customer traffic swung back to growth, undoing July's pattern of falling footfall propped up by higher spending — a shift worth watching as an apparel-demand bellwether.

United Arrows' existing-store sales rose 8.4% year on year in August, the retailer said, as customer traffic swung back into growth after falling in July — a reversal that undoes the pattern the company itself had flagged the month before.

Group-wide, total company sales were up 11.1% in August, United Arrows said in its monthly sales report, ahead of the 8.4% gain at existing stores that strips out the effect of new openings. The company attributed the improvement to more cool days than a year earlier, which it said lifted sales of both full-price and discounted merchandise above the prior-year level.

The clearest strength was online. Existing-store online sales rose 15.6% year on year, and the company said online, which carries a higher share of discounted merchandise, saw "both sales and customer traffic increasing significantly." In store, menswear shirts, cut-and-sew tops, trousers and jackets sold well, and womenswear cut-and-sew tops, cardigans, jackets and shoes did the same, United Arrows said.

Existing-store purchasing customers rose 5.6% year on year in August and average spending per customer was up 1.6%, according to the company. That is a marked shift from July, when United Arrows had reported existing-store customer numbers falling 1.0% even as average spending climbed 4.3% — a spend-up, traffic-down pattern that reversed itself within a month.

The company flagged one caveat that applies to every preliminary monthly figure it publishes this year: the numbers exclude the impact of a change in revenue-recognition standards, which shaved 2.6 percentage points off July's confirmed company-wide sales growth and 2.7 points off confirmed existing-store growth once finalised. August's 11.1% and 8.4% figures are likely to be revised down by a similar margin when United Arrows reports final numbers next month.

United Arrows ended August with 324 stores, including 236 retail locations, 56 online storefronts and 32 outlets, after opening one new online store during the month and no physical stores.

The reversal matters beyond one retailer's ledger. United Arrows sits in the trend-conscious, mid-to-upscale tier of Japanese apparel, and a month in which shoppers came back through the door rather than simply spending more once inside is a healthier kind of growth than July's — assuming it holds. Cooler August weather is doing some of the work here, so the open question is whether traffic keeps climbing once the temperature argument runs out, particularly against the accounting headwind the company has already signalled for its own numbers.
