Aeon Mall confirms 27 November opening for its largest development in Fukushima

Aeon Mall is committing its biggest single-site bet in Fukushima Prefecture to date — a 170-tenant regional mall in Date City that tests how much footfall a non-metro Tohoku market can still support.

Aeon Mall will open "Aeon Mall Date," its largest shopping centre in Fukushima Prefecture, on 27 November at 9am, the company said in a joint release with Aeon Tohoku and Aeon Co. The mall sits in the Donouchi land-readjustment area of Date City, on a site of roughly 169,000 square metres with about 94,000 square metres of total floor area.

About 170 specialty stores will fill the three-storey mall, according to Aeon Mall, including 26 stores making their Tohoku-region debut and 48 opening in Fukushima Prefecture for the first time. Aeon Style Date anchors the centre, with Uniqlo, GU, Muji, Iwase Bookstore, the Mirai no experience facility, a Kojima x Bic Camera unit and Super Sports Xebio named as sub-anchors. Aeon Mall said the food offer — a first-floor Food Marche, second-floor restaurants and a roughly 1,000-seat Food Forest food court on the third floor — will be the largest in Fukushima. The centre will have about 3,600 car parking spaces and 630 for bicycles, plus a rooftop terrace, a children's play area built with local wood, and a community space called "Date-no-wa."

The superlative matters more than the square footage. Fukushima's department-store floors have been thinning for years, and much of Tohoku's discretionary retail spend already routes through Sendai. By building its largest Fukushima centre in Date City rather than the prefectural capital, Aeon is betting that a 170-tenant, full food-and-leisure format can pull shoppers from across the wider Fukushima-city commuting belt on the strength of scale and range alone — a wager only a developer with Aeon's balance sheet and regional-mall playbook can still afford to make.

Whether the bet pays off will show up fastest in the food court and the rooftop terrace: the day-trip traffic they draw over the winter after opening is the number to watch, not the November crowd for the grand opening itself.
