Aeon Mall hits 100% renewable electricity across its entire Japan portfolio

Aeon says every Aeon Mall shopping centre it operates in Japan now runs on effectively 100% renewable electricity, meeting a target it set in 2021 — and pushing the wider group's own renewable share, across supermarkets and drugstores as well as malls, to 68% as of the end of May.

Aeon Co., Ltd. said on 27 July that every Aeon Mall shopping centre it operates in Japan now runs on effectively 100% renewable electricity, meeting a target the retail group set in 2021 to reach the milestone by the end of fiscal 2025. The release did not give a store count.

The achievement sits inside Aeon's wider Decarbonization Vision, the company said, and was reached through a mix of onsite solar power generation and other renewable-electricity supply arrangements. Group-wide, Aeon said roughly 2,000 of its locations now have onsite solar installed, and the group's own effective renewable-electricity share — across its supermarkets, general-merchandise stores, drugstores and other formats, not just the malls — stood at 68% as of the end of May.

The gap between the two figures says more than either number alone. Aeon Mall — the arm that leases retail floors to hundreds of tenants nationwide — has now cleared its self-set target outright, while the parent group's far larger network of supermarkets, drugstores and general-merchandise stores, each with a smaller roof and a thinner budget for solar, pulls the blended figure down to 68%. For a shopping-centre landlord, in our reading, an unqualified 100% is as much a leasing argument as an environmental one: as more international retailers weigh a building's own power sourcing before signing, Aeon Mall can now make that case to every brand under its roof, not just the ones that have already hit their own targets.
