Aeon Retail brings Swedish interiors brand Granit to Japan, choosing Jiyugaoka over its own malls

Aeon Retail is bringing the Swedish home-goods brand Granit to Japan for the first time — and putting its debut store not in one of its own malls, but in Jiyugaoka, Tokyo's established interiors-shopping district.

Aeon Retail will open Japan's first store for Granit, a Swedish home-furnishings brand, in Tokyo's Jiyugaoka district on September 4, the company said in a release.

GRANIT Jiyugaoka will occupy two floors at 1-26-16 Jiyugaoka, Meguro Ward, a three-minute walk from Jiyugaoka Station on the Tokyu Toyoko and Oimachi lines. The store totals about 219 square metres of floor space on a roughly 96-square-metre site and will open from 11am to 8pm, according to Aeon Retail.

Granit was founded in Sweden in 1996 around a philosophy the company translates as "simple living, rich life," building functional, understated home goods from natural materials that Aeon Retail said are popular across Sweden and three other European countries. The Jiyugaoka store will stock roughly 1,000 items carried over directly from Granit's European range: kitchenware, storage, décor and plants on the ground floor, and fabrics, lighting, stationery and furniture on the second, priced from ¥500 to ¥30,000 before tax. Shoppers who spend at least ¥3,000 including tax from opening day will receive a free tote bag while supplies last, the company said.

Aeon Retail said it is targeting the launch at young women drawn to Nordic design and shoppers after a more natural, minimal home — and chose Jiyugaoka over its own mall network to reach them, calling the district an established cluster of interior-goods shops both Japanese and international. That is a Product-and-Place bet rather than a Promotion one: instead of building a Nordic-lifestyle range in-house or slotting a new brand into an existing Aeon Mall, the group is importing Granit's catalogue wholesale and testing it on ground it does not control. Whether Granit stays a single specialty store or becomes a template for bringing more imported lifestyle brands into Aeon Retail's own malls is the next thing worth watching.
