Beams tests the California coast with a weekend-only Malibu shop

Beams' newest US shop trades only three days a week, a low-cost way to gauge Malibu before the group commits to a permanent Los Angeles store.

Beams America, the US subsidiary of Japanese select-shop retailer Beams, has opened a weekend-only shop on the Malibu coast, according to a company release. BEAMS MALIBU, at 23710 Malibu Road, opened on 7 August and trades Friday to Sunday only, from 11:00 to 18:00, closing on major US holidays.

The shop carries a curated edit of Beams' menswear, womenswear and lifestyle goods under a concept the company calls "Weekend by the Sea." Beams America was formed in September 2024 as a joint venture with Pacific Fashion Works, according to the release.

The company said the Malibu shop is a stepping stone toward a permanent flagship in Los Angeles, which it plans to open within the current fiscal year — a target it did not narrow to a specific month.

A weekend-only trial in a small resort address, rather than a Los Angeles retail corridor, reads as a deliberate way to test Californian demand and build a following before signing a full-time lease — a cautious route into a market where Japanese apparel retailers have often found the rent easier to commit to than the customer.
