Cainz opens its first Yokohama Tsuzuki Ward store, a compact format inside Mosaic Mall Kohoku

Japan's largest home-improvement chain tests a station-front, under-2,500-square-metre format in dense suburban Yokohama, the mall's first home-centre tenant.

Cainz opened its first store in Yokohama's Tsuzuki Ward on 15 July, taking a roughly 2,384-square-metre (721-tsubo) space on the second floor of Mosaic Mall Kohoku, according to the retailer. It is the mall's first home-centre tenant.

The company described the store as a compact, urban-format outlet built around the site's station-front convenience, with an assortment weighted toward time-saving and space-efficient products, alongside a pet-supplies section, a remodelling consultation counter and a cycling-specialist area. Cainz said the store runs from 10am to 8pm with a staff of 49, shares roughly 1,100 parking spaces with the mall, and offers app-based click-and-collect ordering, self-checkout via its "Pocket Reji" smartphone system, and home delivery for a flat ¥500 fee. Yamato Takaaki is the store manager.

At under 2,400 square metres, the Mosaic Mall Kohoku store is a fraction of a typical suburban Cainz box, and the format bet is really about where the company can still find space — dense, already-built-out Yokohama residential districts leave little room for a full-size home centre, so Cainz is instead threading a curated, delivery-backed assortment into an existing mall. If the model works here, it is the template for further infill sites in cities where a conventional store cannot be sited at all.
