CAINZ opens its 10th small urban renovation shop, inside a Tokyo station building

CAINZ opened its tenth small-format renovation-consultation shop on October 15 inside the Yuaelm Aoto complex, directly connected to Keisei Aoto Station in Tokyo -- a 24.8-square-metre counter that fits the kind of leftover, station-adjacent space Japan's ageing suburban shopping buildings are now giving up, as the home-improvement chain works toward a stated 50 such shops by next fiscal year.

CAINZ Corporation said it opened a new small-format renovation-consultation shop, CAINZ Renovation Yuaelm Aoto (カインズリフォーム ユアエルム青戸店), on October 15 inside the Yuaelm Aoto commercial complex in Katsushika Ward, Tokyo, directly connected to Keisei Aoto Station. The shop measures 24.8 square metres, is open 10am to 8pm, and takes both booked and walk-in renovation consultations, the company said.

It is CAINZ's tenth small urban-format renovation shop nationwide and its sixth in Tokyo, joining existing counters at Musashi-Kokubunji, Shapo Koiwa, Ogikubo Town Seven, Lumière Shin-Koiwa and Odakyu Machida, the company said. CAINZ is targeting 20 such shops by the end of this fiscal year and 50 by the end of next, according to the release.

The format is the story here, more than the location: each shop is a consultation counter, not a showroom or a warehouse, where staff help a customer choose between fixing a leaking toilet or a worn screen door themselves, buying the right product, or booking a professional contractor -- rather than selling construction work outright. At under 25 square metres, it is small enough to fit into the kind of leftover, station-adjacent space that has been opening up as anchor tenants shrink or turn over inside Japan's ageing suburban shopping buildings, which is exactly the footprint CAINZ is betting it can repeat across dozens of cities.

Getting from ten shops to a stated fifty will depend on whether a 25-square-metre counter can generate enough contractor referrals and product sales to cover the rent on a station-connected site -- the ratio CAINZ will have to prove, one small shop at a time, well before it reaches that number.
