Descente turns its Ginza golf complex into a three-floor 'premium sports' flagship
Descente is converting its golf-only complex on Ginza's Namiki-dori into a full-line flagship spanning training wear, its outdoor Alterrain line and what it calls the country's largest footwear floor for the brand — holding, and broadening, its ground on one of Tokyo's most-watched luxury streets.
Descente has converted its golf-only complex on Ginza's Namiki-dori into a full-line flagship, reopening on September 17 as DESCENTE GINZA with training wear, its outdoor-technical Alterrain line and what the company calls its largest-scale footwear floor.
The store occupies 332.28 square metres over three floors at 5-5-18 Ginza, Chuo-ku, replacing what had been DESCENTE GOLF COMPLEX GINZA, a golf-only unit, according to the company. The first floor carries training wear and footwear — sneakers, sandals, boots and golf shoes together — styled with angled plaster walls the company says reference a ski slope; the second is given over entirely to Alterrain; the third keeps golf wear and footwear alongside an events space with a ceiling-mounted screen.
Interior design is by Koichiro Onoki of ODS/Onoki Design Studio, who the company said has designed several Descente flagships since 2025 and has won multiple Sky Design and JID awards. The opening is preceded by a September 16 talk event with actor and former elite distance runner Masato Wada, a raffle for the brand's polo shirts, and a pre-sale of its water-resistant Mizusawa Down collection.
Golf gives up ground, not the address
Namiki-dori carries some of Ginza's highest ground rents and is lined mostly with international maisons, so a domestic sportswear group broadening its footprint there, rather than shrinking it, is a bet that training wear and technical outdoor gear can hold a floor usually reserved for fashion and beauty. It also widens who the address is for: golf retail skews older and narrower, while footwear and training wear pull a broader, younger customer through the same door.
