FamilyMart pushes into Hanoi, its first move into northern Vietnam in 17 years
FamilyMart will hold a grand-opening ceremony on 19 September for its sixth Hanoi store, following two locations opened in August — its first push into northern Vietnam since entering Ho Chi Minh City in 2009 — with a target of around 20 Hanoi stores by the end of this fiscal year.

FamilyMart will hold a grand-opening ceremony on 19 September for a store in Hanoi's Royal City complex, according to a company release — its sixth store in the Vietnamese capital and its first push into the country's north since entering Vietnam in Ho Chi Minh City in December 2009. Two earlier Hanoi stores opened ahead of schedule in August; FamilyMart said one of those locations posted first-week sales at 160% of plan. The company operates roughly 200 stores across Vietnam as of the end of July, concentrated until now in and around Ho Chi Minh City, and is targeting about 20 stores in Hanoi by the end of this fiscal year.
FamilyMart said the Hanoi rollout will draw on operating know-how built up over 17 years in Ho Chi Minh City, including a larger complement of Japanese expatriate staff and the deployment of experienced store managers to help localise operations in the new city.
Seventeen years is a long time to sit still in one metro area of a market this size, and it says something about how much groundwork a convenience-store chain thinks a genuinely new city requires before it will commit — Hanoi's consumer habits, supply chains and site economics don't simply mirror Ho Chi Minh City's. The early sales figure is a single data point rather than a trend, but moving experienced managers and expatriate staff into a launch market is a People bet: convenience retail lives or dies on execution consistency across hundreds of small, staff-run boxes, and FamilyMart appears to be trying to replicate its southern operating discipline in the north before it scales toward its 20-store target. It's part of a broader pattern in Vietnam this month, with other Japanese-linked operators also pushing into secondary cities on similar reasoning: build where you already know how to operate, then extend outward.
