Fauchon's Kyoto hotel prices a 140th-anniversary set at ¥1,886 — the maison's founding year

Six eclairs, four Bizz Bizz cakes, and one set priced to the maison's 1886 founding — a month-long patisserie campaign built entirely around a number.

FAUCHON L'Hotel Kyoto said it will mark the 140th anniversary of the French maison's 1886 founding with a month-long patisserie campaign in September, running six eclair flavours and four Bizz Bizz cake flavours through the hotel's Pastry & Boutique Fauchon.

The eclairs — berry, caramel, Shine Muscat grape, hazelnut, Japanese chestnut mont blanc and chocolate — are priced at ¥880 each, and the Bizz Bizz cakes, including an exclusive One Night in Kyoto green-tea blend alongside hazelnut, cherry sherry and lychee raspberry flavours, at ¥1,200 each, the hotel said. A ¥1,886 anniversary set pairing an eclair with a beverage, its price a direct reference to the founding year, requires advance reservation and is served at the hotel's 10th-floor tea salon and restaurant between 10am and 6pm.

Pricing a single item to a founding date is a small gesture, but it turns an anniversary that otherwise means little to a Kyoto shopper into something they can buy and understand at a glance — a cheap way to make a maison's history legible on a hotel patisserie counter that, unlike the boutique upstairs, does not depend on a room booking to generate revenue.
