Freak's Store opens its first store outside Japan, in Taipei, for its 40th anniversary

Daytona International, the Tokyo operator behind select shop Freak's Store, is opening the brand's first store outside Japan in Taipei on November 6 — a single-market test abroad timed to the brand's 40th anniversary, rather than a wider overseas push.

Daytona International, the Tokyo-based operator of select shop Freak's Store, said it will open the brand's first store outside Japan in Taipei on November 6, timed to mark the 40th anniversary of the brand's founding, according to a release dated October 1.

The store, a ground-floor, street-facing shop in Taipei's Da'an district, opens at 1pm local time, the company said. Freak's Store, which curates fashion, music and lifestyle goods built around American culture, was founded in Japan in 1986; Daytona International, its operating company, was established in April 1990 and is based in Shibuya, Tokyo. The Taipei shop will carry merchandise and novelty items exclusive to the Taiwan market, Daytona said, and will run its own Instagram account separate from the brand's Japan channels.

Taipei, rather than a larger market, is a deliberate first move: a single storefront lets Daytona test overseas demand for a 40-year-old domestic brand concept without committing to the capital or lease terms a bigger launch would need, timed to an anniversary that gives the opening its own marketing story. Whether it leads to a wider overseas rollout for Freak's Store, or stays a one-off anniversary project, will depend on how a largely Americana-inflected, Japan-honed edit translates to a market Daytona has not operated in before.

The real test comes once the anniversary attention fades — whether Taipei shoppers return for Freak's Store's regular edit, not just its opening week.
