H2O Retailing relaunches its department-store app as a cardless loyalty platform, targeting 3 million members by FY2030
H2O Retailing is relaunching the Hankyu Hanshin department-store app as a cardless membership platform tied to its group-wide H2O ID data system, aiming for 3 million app members by fiscal 2030.

H2O Retailing Co., Ltd. is relaunching its Hankyu Hanshin department-store app so that the physical S-mark point card is no longer required, with the membership card accessible inside the app at checkout instead, according to the company's own announcement. Early downloads open from 9 September, and the app takes over store service from 30 September; H2O Retailing said it is targeting 3 million app members by fiscal 2030.
The relaunched app links into H2O ID, the group's shared customer-data platform, which the company said lets it view a member's purchase history and event bookings together and identify individual customers, rather than relying on point-card data alone. A new tiered membership programme replaces the previous structure, running from a White entry tier up to Diamond, based on annual spending, the release said.
As a launch incentive, the first 200,000 people to download the app will receive 1,000 S-points, and credit-card members are eligible for a separate prize draw of 10,000 winners, the company said. H2O Retailing frames the relaunch as part of its Long-term Business Vision 2030, under which it has described itself as aiming to become a "communication retailer."
Trading a physical card for an app is a familiar move across Japanese retail, but the more consequential change here is the shift from card-linked purchase data, which a household can share across several cardholders, to an ID meant to identify the individual shopper: it is a bet that knowing exactly who bought what, not just which card was used, is worth the friction of asking loyal department-store customers — a famously card-loyal, often older, demographic — to switch to a phone.
