Hankyu Umeda's flagship surges 15.6% in September while its sister store next door stalls
H2O Retailing's own September sales flash shows its Hankyu Umeda flagship surging 15.6% year on year while Hanshin Umeda, its sister main store across the same terminal complex, barely grew at all — the clearest read yet on how concentrated Osaka's department-store demand has become on a single flagship floor.

H2O Retailing said sales at its Hankyu Umeda main store rose 15.6 per cent year on year in September, even as its Hanshin Umeda main store, a short walk away in the same Osaka terminal complex, gained just 0.6 per cent, according to the company's own monthly sales flash report dated October 1. Branch stores across the Hankyu Hanshin Department Stores chain rose 3.6 per cent, bringing the group's combined department-store total to a 9.5 per cent increase for the month.
Supermarkets under the group fell 2.3 per cent on an existing-store basis over the same month. H2O Retailing flagged the figures as a quick estimate, with definitive numbers subject to change.
The September snapshot continues a pattern that has been building since spring. H2O Retailing's own monthly data, published alongside the September figures, shows Hankyu Umeda posting double-digit year-on-year growth in four of the past six months — May, June, July and now September — while never falling below a 7 per cent gain even in its softest month. Hanshin Umeda tells a different story: after peaking at 27.1 per cent growth in May, its year-on-year gain has slowed for four straight months, to 11.9 per cent in July, 5.6 per cent in August and just 0.6 per cent in September.
Two main stores inside the same Osaka terminal, under the same holding company, are now moving in opposite directions — one compounding gains, the other grinding toward flat. That split matters more than the blended 9.5 per cent headline: it suggests Osaka's inbound and luxury spending, rather than lifting the whole Umeda shopping district evenly, is concentrating ever more tightly on whichever flagship floor currently holds the stronger line-up and footfall draw. Branch stores' steadier 3.6 per cent gain looks modest by comparison, but it is the only part of the chain growing at a pace that isn't swinging wildly month to month.
What to watch next is whether Hanshin Umeda's slide toward flat growth reverses once H2O Retailing's autumn promotions land, or whether Hankyu Umeda keeps pulling further ahead of its sister store under the same roof.
