Hankyu Umeda's September sales surged 15.6% while its twin flagship Hanshin Umeda barely moved
Hankyu Umeda's main store surged 15.6% in September while its sister flagship, Hanshin Umeda, barely moved — a split that shows how unevenly demand is landing on Japan's department-store floors this autumn.

Hankyu Hanshin Department Stores said September sales at its flagship Hankyu Umeda main store rose 15.6% year on year, while its twin flagship a few minutes' walk away, Hanshin Umeda main store, were almost flat at +0.6%, according to the H2O Retailing group's monthly sales flash report dated October 1.
Company-wide, the department-store business's total sales rose 9.5% year on year in September, with branch stores (the group's smaller, non-flagship locations) up 3.6%. The group's supermarket arm moved the other way: existing-store sales fell 2.3% year on year, H2O Retailing's release said.
The two Umeda flagships were moving in different directions a month earlier too, but not nearly this far apart: Hankyu Umeda's growth accelerated from +9.7% in August to +15.6% in September, while Hanshin Umeda decelerated from +5.6% in August to +0.6%, the monthly data show.
Hankyu Umeda and Hanshin Umeda sit a few hundred metres apart in the same Osaka station district, under the same holding company, selling to overlapping catchments — which makes the size of the gap worth noting rather than the gap itself. A double-digit swing at one flagship and a near-stall at its sibling points to demand concentrating unevenly even inside one operator's own portfolio, not just between rival chains. It is also the earliest hard read on how Japan's department-store sector is tracking into autumn, ahead of the Japan Department Stores Association's nationwide September figure, due around 20-25 October.
