Hanshin Umeda lines up a storewide Pingu Christmas and a 40-dish Cheese Day for Osaka's holiday run-in

Hanshin Umeda Main Store (阪神梅田本店) in Osaka is opening the holiday season with back-to-back floor events: a storewide Christmas campaign built around its first collaboration with the stop-motion character Pingu (ピングー), running November 5 to December 25, followed by a Cheese Day food-hall showcase of roughly 40 dishes from November 11 -- the kind of layered seasonal programming a flagship department store runs to keep shoppers moving through every floor before the new year.

Hankyu Hanshin Department Stores, Inc. (株式会社阪急阪神百貨店) said its Hanshin Umeda Main Store (阪神梅田本店) in Osaka will run a storewide Christmas campaign, "Hanshin's Christmas 2026" (阪神のクリスマス2026), from November 5 to December 25 -- the store's first collaboration with Pingu (ピングー), the stop-motion penguin character that has aired on television in more than 155 countries since 1990, according to a November 4 release.

Pingu makes two in-person appearances during the run, each for about five minutes around 10am -- November 7 on the second floor and December 2 on the basement level -- while character decorations run storewide throughout the campaign. A dedicated photo booth (¥500 a session) operates on the ninth floor through December 1 before moving to an eighth-floor Christmas market space, and the store is handing out a Pingu-themed message-card charm with in-store purchases and, from December 2, a limited Christmas shopper bag while supplies last. Hankyu Hanshin is also lighting an underground passage at Osaka Station with Pingu-themed illumination through the same period.

The campaign also rotates in event-space pop-ups through the season: a crystal costume-jewellery pop-up from designer Maki Numoto (November 11-17), a 175th-anniversary pop-up from British trench-coat maker Aquascutum (November 18-24), and a building-block toy pop-up called Engaging Toys (November 18 to December 27), alongside two ticketed parent-child craft workshops -- a pottery session (¥2,200) on November 7 and a baby handprint ornament session (from ¥2,200) on November 14 and 15.

A character tie-in spread across an entire department store, rather than confined to one atrium display, is a Presentation play aimed at pulling shoppers through every level in the weeks that matter most to a department store's annual gift calendar. Pingu's decades of recognition across age groups gives Hanshin a safe, broadly familiar face for that job, and the gift-wrap tie-ins -- a message card, a ribbon, a limited bag -- are built to travel with purchases made on floors that have nothing to do with the character itself.

A cheese-focused food hall, timed to Cheese Day

Separately, Hankyu Hanshin said the store's Hanshin Food Hall (阪神食品館), on the basement and first floors, will mark November 11's Cheese Day (チーズの日) with a Winter Food Festival (冬の食品祭) running November 11 to 24, offering roughly 40 cheese dishes -- savoury items, cheesecakes, breads and Japanese confectionery -- nine of them exclusive to the Umeda store. The food hall also times the season's first Beaujolais Nouveau release to November 19, in its basement wine section.

Paired with the Christmas campaign running upstairs, the food hall showcase is the basement half of the same seasonal push: give shoppers a reason to detour through the depachika (basement food hall) on the way to or from the Christmas floors, with store-exclusive items aimed at rewarding a loyal, repeat shopper rather than a one-off visitor.
