James Perse reopens at Hankyu Men's Osaka as a standalone menswear store

LA lifestyle label James Perse reopens inside Hankyu Men's Osaka on October 21, in what Hankyu Hanshin calls the first standalone men's-only James Perse store in the Kansai region, with a winter line themed on a Saint-Germain sunset.

Hankyu Hanshin Department Stores said James Perse, the Los Angeles-based lifestyle label, will reopen on the third floor of Hankyu Men's Osaka on October 21 as what the department-store operator calls the first standalone men's-only James Perse store in the Kansai region, according to a release.

The remodelled store is built around a wood-grain structure decorated with palm trees and surfboards, meant to express what the department store calls "adult California luxury," with the interior finished in muted, understated tones.

The store's winter line, called Sunset St. Germain, depicts a sunset over Paris's Saint-Germain district, the release said. Pieces on offer include a brushed-cotton jacket at 154,000 yen paired with matching trousers at 116,600 yen, both in an Italian brushed-knit fabric with a drawstring elastic waist; a lightweight cashmere zip hoodie at 196,900 yen; and corduroy trousers in a French fabric with military-style detailing at 84,700 yen.

It is a modest booking against a department-store group's scale, but it marks a shift in format: rather than carrying James Perse as part of a broader lifestyle or women's assortment, as is typical at a Japanese department store, Hankyu Men's Osaka is giving the brand a dedicated men's-only floor presence. For a building built around menswear specifically, a single-brand standalone store is a bet that a relatively accessible, lifestyle-priced American label can anchor foot traffic on its own, rather than only inside a multi-brand selling floor.
