JR East turns Takanawa Gateway City into a one-day swim-and-run festival
JR East is staging its first swim-and-run festival at Takanawa Gateway City this October, an event built to draw footfall through a Tokyo transit development whose retail floors are still filling in.
East Japan Railway Company (JR East) will hold its first swim-and-run festival at Takanawa Gateway City this autumn, according to the company's own newsroom, an athletic event built to pull footfall into a Tokyo transit-oriented development whose shops and towers are still filling in.
The "TAKANAWA GATEWAY CITY SWIM & RUN FESTA 2026" runs Saturday, October 31, JR East said. Swimming takes place in the pool at THE JEXER TAKANAWA, the sports and wellness facility inside the development; the run follows an outdoor course through the district itself; and Gateway Park hosts retail activations tied to the NEWoMan Takanawa shopping complex. JR East has framed the day under the concept "PLAY TAKANAWA GATEWAY CITY," which it says is meant to build community and exchange across generations.
Entry spans five categories -- lower- and upper-elementary kids' races, an adult individual event, an adult relay and a parent-child relay -- with registration opening August 28 through the Japan Triathlon Union's website, according to JR East. The bill also includes a demonstration the company calls "humanoid future experience content," an appearance by para-triathletes Hideki Uda and Yukako Hata, and post-race access to THE JEXER TAKANAWA's spa and sauna for participants.
JR East is among Tokyo's largest station-area landlords, and Takanawa Gateway City -- opened in phases since 2024 -- is still building out the retail base meant to anchor it long-term. A one-day festival is a Promotion bet more than a retail one: it draws an amateur-triathlon crowd who might otherwise have no reason to visit, then routes them past NEWoMan's shops and the wellness tenants that make up a good share of the district's floor space, buying attention for a still-thin retail mix while the rest of the development fills in.
