Matsukiyococokara takes full ownership of organic-beauty brand John Masters Organics

Matsukiyococokara & Company, Japan's largest drugstore group, is taking full ownership of organic-cosmetics brand John Masters Organics — folding a founder-led beauty label into a 3,600-store retail and supply-chain network the buyer says can grow it faster than it could alone.

Matsukiyococokara & Company's subsidiary MCC Management will acquire 100 percent of the operating company behind organic-cosmetics brand John Masters Organics, making it a wholly owned subsidiary, according to a release from John Masters Organics Group Inc. distributed via PR TIMES on 24 August. The transaction price was not disclosed.

John Masters Organics Group, founded in 2017 and based in Tokyo's Meguro Ward, plans, manufactures and sells the John Masters Organics line of organic cosmetics under president Yuichiro Otaki, who the release said will continue to lead the brand's management after the deal closes. MCC Management, the drugstore group's holding subsidiary for group companies, was established in 2021, according to the release.

The buyer's stated rationale is straightforwardly scale: Matsukiyococokara operates more than 3,600 drugstores nationwide, and the release said combining that distribution and supply-chain infrastructure with John Masters Organics' brand strength and customer-experience know-how would let the brand grow “at a speed and scale” it could not reach independently — a claim from the companies, not a disclosed target. The release said the brand's existing philosophy and values, and its current products, services and in-store and e-commerce experience, would continue unchanged.

The logic fits a pattern already visible elsewhere in Japanese retail: a mass-channel operator buying outright control of a founder-scale beauty brand rather than simply stocking it, so that assortment, pricing and shelf placement across thousands of doors can be set centrally instead of negotiated store by store. For John Masters Organics, the trade is independence in exchange for distribution reach — a bet that Matsukiyococokara's logistics and customer data can do for the brand's growth curve what its own marketing budget could not.
