Japan's biggest drugstore chain adds a crackling candy to its 'beauty snack' private label

Matsukiyo Cocokara, Japan's largest drugstore operator, is extending its private-label 'beauty snack' format with a crackling candy formulated with iron and vitamin E -- a small but concrete read on how far functional snacking is being pushed on the cosmetics floor.

Matsukiyo Cocokara & Company has added a new product, matsukiyo BEAU DOLCE Popping Cube, to its private-label 'beauty snack' line, the drugstore operator said. The candy comes in two flavours -- lemon, formulated with dietary fibre and vitamin E, and mixed berry, formulated with dietary fibre and iron -- and crackles on the tongue, a texture the company is pitching as a point of difference from an ordinary candy. Each 35-gram, 213-yen (tax included) pack goes on sale November 11 at Matsumoto Kiyoshi and Cocokara Fine stores nationwide, with some exceptions, and through the company's own online store, in a resealable pouch meant to travel to an office desk or a bag.

BEAU DOLCE is Matsukiyo Cocokara's running line of confectionery built around added nutrients rather than flavour alone, packaged to resemble cosmetics rather than conventional snacks; the company said the series has been well received by customers to date, and the new cube extends the range rather than replacing anything in it.

The product itself is small change -- a 213-yen candy -- but the company behind it is not: Matsukiyo Cocokara runs more than 3,600 stores across every prefecture in Japan, plus 105 stores across six overseas markets as of the end of June. Its own-brand 'beauty snack' format applies the same cosmetics-floor logic that sells serums and supplements to domestic and inbound shoppers alike to something priced and shelved like a convenience-store impulse buy -- a cheap, repeatable way to keep testing how far the 'beauty' label can stretch into snacking before a customer decides it's just candy.
