AEON's cacao-free TopValu chocolate snack passes 2 million units, adds three flavours
AEON Co. and its private-label arm AEON TopValu said their cacao-free chocolate-alternative snack "Choco-ka?" has sold more than 2 million units cumulatively and is adding three new flavours from November 3 across roughly 5,300 stores nationwide -- a private-label hedge against a confectionery category exposed to volatile global cocoa costs.

AEON Co., Ltd. and its private-label subsidiary AEON TopValu Co., Ltd. said their cacao-free confectionery line "Choco-ka?" (チョコか?) -- a snack designed to taste like chocolate without using any cacao -- has sold more than 2 million units cumulatively since launch, and will add three new flavours from November 3, including a salted-pretzel variant, taking the series to ten products in total, according to a joint release dated October 14.
The new flavours roll out in stages across roughly 5,300 stores nationwide under the AEON, AEON Style and MaxValu banners, the companies said; pricing was not disclosed in the release.
The appeal of a cacao-free formulation is that it insulates a private-label confectionery line from cacao itself as a raw-material cost -- relevant at a moment when the international cocoa market has been volatile in recent years, a pressure on margins for conventional chocolate confectionery. Passing 2 million cumulative units gives TopValu evidence the format has found buyers beyond novelty-seekers, which is presumably why AEON is expanding the range rather than simply restocking the original.
Whether "Choco-ka?" becomes a standing private-label category, rather than a one-off hedge against a volatile commodity, is the thing to watch -- and AEON's bet, visible in the jump from seven products to ten, is that it already has.
