Matsukiyococokara puts a ¥9,350 house-brand serum across its drugstore network

Matsukiyococokara is putting a ¥9,350 house-brand serum — priced closer to a department-store counter than a typical drugstore private label — across nearly its entire chain, a bet that its inbound-heavy cosmetics floors can capture more premium-beauty margin under its own name.

Matsukiyococokara & Co. said it will launch a ¥9,350, four-ingredient medicinal serum across nearly all of its Matsumotokiyoshi and Cocokara Fine group stores on November 11, the flagship update to a house skincare line it says has been on shelves for 20 years, according to a release dated September 30.

The Retinotime Enhanced Serum, a 50mL bottle priced at ¥9,350 including tax, combines four active ingredients — a niacinamide RF complex, tranexamic acid, D-panthenol and isopropylmethylphenol — that the company says address skin whitening, wrinkle improvement and irritation prevention in one product, a combination it describes as a first for the Japanese market. It will be sold at nearly all group stores and on the company's own online store. Matsukiyococokara said the Retinotime brand it belongs to now generates annual sales of about ¥2.8 billion.

The company's "first in Japan" and combined-benefit claims are Matsukiyococokara's own positioning rather than independently verified facts. What is verifiable is the price: ¥9,350 sits well above what drugstores typically charge for a private-label serum, closer to a department-store counter brand than an own-label staple. Matsukiyococokara runs the inbound-heavy cosmetics floors in Ginza, Shinsaibashi and Shinjuku that have powered much of Japan's tax-free beauty spending, and pushing a premium private label through that network, rather than only stocking more national brands, is a bet that it can capture more of that margin itself.
