MatsukiyoCocokara's nake Brand Adds a Stick Shadow, Signalling Continued Ambition in Own-Brand Cosmetics
A new eye product from the drugstore group's co-developed beauty label tests whether 'skin-first' positioning can hold up beyond complexion categories.

MatsukiyoCocokara & Company is extending its co-developed private-label cosmetics line nake into eye makeup with a stick shadow product set to go on sale on 1 September 2026. The item will be stocked across Matsumotokiyoshi Group and Cocokara Fine Group outlets nationwide — with some store exceptions — as well as on the company's own online store, according to the company. The move is worth tracking because it tests whether a positioning built around complexion and 'skin-toning' cosmetics can translate credibly into a colour category that has historically rewarded specialist brands.
The nake brand is jointly developed with cosmetics manufacturer Isehan Co., Ltd., and operates under the concept of 'more than skincare, less than makeup'. The new stick shadow — named the nake Nuance Glow Stick — is positioned around adding subtle natural shadow to the eye area rather than delivering an overtly made-up finish. It retails at ¥1,430 including tax in a 1.5 g format. The formulation incorporates several moisturising ingredients, including plant-derived ceramide, collagen, plant-derived squalane and botanical extracts, and the company states it has undergone non-comedogenic testing.
The 'No-Makeup Makeup' Positioning Meets Its Harder Test
Skincare-infused, natural-finish cosmetics have found receptive consumers in Japan across base and complexion items, but eye products carry a different purchase logic: the consumer is typically seeking a visible result, however understated. nake's answer appears to be a warm brown shade designed to work as a single-step product — the brand describes it as finishing the eye area with one item. Whether that restraint reads as sophistication or limitation will likely be visible in reorder rates rather than initial sell-through, given the modest price point and the appeal to first-time buyers.
From a retail network standpoint, the reach is considerable. The company operates more than 3,600 stores across all 47 prefectures in Japan, according to its own figures, giving a new private-label SKU instant national distribution without the marketing overhead that an independent cosmetics brand would require. The ambassador appointed in March 2026, Outa Kagaya, is described by the company as embodying a natural yet resolute aesthetic and a gender-fluid appeal — an alignment consistent with the broader market trend towards inclusive beauty positioning in mass-market cosmetics.
What to watch: the velocity of the Nuance Glow Stick relative to nake's existing complexion range will indicate whether the brand has genuine cross-category pull, or whether 'skin-toning' loyalty is category-specific. Equally relevant for foreign beauty brands scouting shelf strategy is how MatsukiyoCocokara prices and positions this against both its standard own-label cosmetics and the mid-tier imported colour lines it stocks — the ¥1,430 price point sits at a deliberate intersection that neither commodity nor prestige, and that is precisely where many international challengers are attempting to compete.
