Mitsubishi Estate Simon links Sendai Izumi Premium Outlets to Onagawa's tsunami-recovery tourist trail

Mitsubishi Estate Simon is running its first coupon-and-raffle tie-up between Sendai Izumi Premium Outlets and Michi-no-Eki Onagawa, timed to the tsunami-hit town's 100th anniversary, turning the outlet's own shopper traffic into a funnel toward the Sanriku coast reconstruction trail.

Mitsubishi Estate Simon Co., Ltd., which operates Sendai Izumi Premium Outlets, said it is running its first tie-up campaign with Michi-no-Eki Onagawa, the roadside rest stop in the tsunami-hit town of Onagawa, Miyagi Prefecture, from October 17, 2026 to January 31, 2027.

The campaign is timed to Onagawa's 100th anniversary of incorporation as a town in 2026, the company said, and is meant to draw visitors across both shopping and sightseeing in Miyagi -- pulling footfall between the Sendai metropolitan area and the Sanriku coast, where Onagawa sits. Mitsubishi Estate has been involved in the town's post-tsunami reconstruction planning, and Izumi Park Town Tapio, a shopping facility run by the Mitsubishi Estate group next to the outlet, already has a sister-shopping-street arrangement with an Onagawa retail street, the company said.

The mechanics run both ways. Visitors to Michi-no-Eki Onagawa can take a flyer's exchange ticket to the outlet's information centre for a shopping coupon sheet, and enter a prize draw for outlet shopping vouchers, Mitsubishi Estate group gift cards, or a set of Onagawa-farmed silver salmon; same-day users of the outlet's own PO PAY payment app get an extra draw entry. Outlet shoppers who spend ¥5,000 or more in a day get a ticket, redeemable at the roadside station, for one free entry to the Onagawa Onsen YuPoppo bath plus a ¥200 voucher to spend inside the station -- capped at the first 500 people to use it, with PO PAY users again getting a second ticket.

Onagawa mayor Yoshiaki Suda thanked the Mitsubishi Estate group for its support of the town's reconstruction, including its role in launching and running the Sea Pal Pia Onagawa commercial facility, and closed with an invitation to visit: "Please do come to Onagawa -- we look forward to seeing you!"

Sendai Izumi Premium Outlets, roughly 80 stores built in an American northeastern-town style on the city's northern edge, is one of several Mitsubishi Estate Simon malls that sit well outside the usual inbound-tourist circuit, so its natural catchment is shoppers from greater Sendai and northern Miyagi. Routing a share of that traffic toward a town still rebuilding from the 2011 tsunami, at the moment it is marking its centenary, converts an outlet's ordinary shopper flow into a small, repeatable piece of regional recovery tourism -- the kind of use for a mall's footfall that a tenant mix alone can't deliver.
