Marriott's Moxy opens its first Japanese alpine resort, ski-in/ski-out beside the Niseko Village gondola
Marriott has opened a 310-room Moxy hotel directly beside the Niseko Village gondola, the playful lifestyle brand's first Japanese alpine property, just as an eight-person gondola upgrade due in December doubles the resort's uplift capacity.
Marriott International said it has opened Moxy Niseko Village, a 310-room hotel built directly beside the Niseko Village gondola in Hokkaido, giving guests ski-in/ski-out access to the slopes. It is the fifth Moxy in Japan and, according to the company, the playful, budget-lifestyle brand's first property inside a Japanese alpine resort.
The hotel sits roughly two hours from New Chitose International Airport, with JR Niseko Station ten minutes away and JR Kutchan Station twenty, Marriott said. Rooms are built around loft-style bunk beds, and the property carries three food and drink outlets — Moxy Bar, Moxy Bar & Café and Moxy Grab & Go — alongside a 24-hour fitness centre and an outdoor foot onsen.
"Niseko's year-round appeal, global reputation and adventurous spirit make it a natural fit for Moxy," said Cristiano Rinaldi, Marriott's chief lodging product and services officer for Asia Pacific excluding China, in the announcement.
The hotel's opening lines up with an eight-person gondola due in December, which Marriott said will double Niseko Village's uplift capacity and open access to more than 30 kilometres of terrain.
Niseko's international hotel roster to date has skewed towards full-service luxury — Ritz-Carlton, Park Hyatt and Fairmont all have a foothold in the resort — so a playful, select-service brand landing beside the main gondola is a bet on a different kind of guest: younger, more design-led skiers who want ski-in/ski-out convenience without the price tag of the resort's flagship hotels. Positioning the property that way, just as lift capacity itself is about to double, points to Marriott's read on where Niseko's next wave of demand actually sits.
