A Wakayama select shop opens its first shop next to a department store, with Margiela and Balenciaga on the rail
Maruko Corporation, the Wakayama company behind select shop R&Co., has opened a storefront beside Kintetsu Department Store Wakayama carrying Maison Margiela and Balenciaga — a small, concrete sign of how far contemporary-luxury multi-brand retail is now reaching outside Tokyo and Osaka.

Maruko Corporation, the Wakayama-based company behind contemporary-fashion select shop R&Co., said it opened a new storefront on October 1 adjacent to Kintetsu Department Store Wakayama, stocking Maison Margiela, Balenciaga, Valentino, Moncler, Marni, Our Legacy and Acne Studios, according to a release dated September 29.
The shop sits on the ground floor at 5-18 Tomoda-cho in Wakayama City, open 10am to 7pm, the company said. Maruko itself dates to November 1954, but the R&Co. brand was born in Wakayama only in 1997 — meaning it took nearly three decades of trading in the prefecture before the company moved next to the city's leading department store, a step it described as its first department-store-adjacent expansion in Wakayama.
Maruko said it contracted all of the store's design and fit-out work to Wakayama-based firms, framing the choice as support for the local construction trade, and that the company's representative described the opening as the fulfilment of a long-standing ambition. As an opening promotion, the first 100 customers spending ¥55,000 or more will receive a custom-blended fragrance made exclusively for the launch, the company said.
The line-up matters more than the square footage. A shop carrying Margiela and Balenciaga alongside Moncler and Marni is a Tokyo or Osaka fixture by default; seeing the same roster assembled next to a regional department store in Wakayama — a market with none of the inbound tourist traffic or flagship budgets of the big cities — says more about where contemporary-luxury demand has spread than any single capital-city opening would.
What happens next is the real test: whether Wakayama's spending can sustain a Margiela-level price point on an ongoing basis, or whether the opening-week fragrance giveaway and the long-held-dream framing turn out to be the high-water mark.
