Takashimaya uses AI to patch a shortage of kimono pattern designers
Two new Edo Komon patterns going on sale next month are less a heritage-craft marketing story than a live test of whether AI can keep a department store's kimono supply chain staffed.

Takashimaya will put two new Edo Komon kimono-textile patterns on sale on 7 October at five of its stores and at JR Nagoya Takashimaya, the department-store group said, the result of a roughly year-long project with Bunkyo Gakuin University that paired AI-generated design support with veteran craftsmen. The patterns, named "Orchestra" and "Grapes and Squirrel," were developed to address a shortage of the pattern designers (図案師) who create the kare-mono stencil designs behind Edo Komon dyeing.
In Takashimaya's account, the AI analyses historical Edo Komon works to propose new placements consistent with the technique's traditional aesthetic; master craftspeople then review, adjust and finalise the design before it goes through the traditional hand stencil-cutting (kiribori) and resist-dyeing process. Takashimaya framed the project's intent plainly: as it put it, the aim is that AI "supplements the shortage of artisans rather than replacing them."
The framing is doing real work. Department stores have run plenty of AI-and-craft marketing collaborations that stop at the campaign; this one is aimed instead at the production bottleneck itself — a shrinking pool of pattern designers that a declining kimono market and an ageing craft workforce have made close to irreplaceable. If AI-assisted design genuinely lets Takashimaya keep commissioning new kerenmono patterns at a viable pace, that is a fix with more staying power than a limited-edition drop, because it targets the supply Takashimaya's kimono floor depends on, not just the demand for it.
The test of that claim comes fast: whether Takashimaya returns with a third pattern on the same model within the next year will say more about whether this scales than how the first two sell.
