Seiko marks 145 years with a nine-model 'Edo purple' capsule spanning its whole line-up

Seiko is marking its 145th anniversary not with one hero watch but with nine, spreading a single design idea across nearly every price tier and product line it sells.

Seiko Watch Corporation is marking its 145th anniversary with a capsule of nine limited-edition watches spanning six of its product lines, the company said in a statement. Rather than a single flagship piece, the anniversary collection runs from a ¥60,500 Seiko Selection model up to ¥330,000, covering Prospex, Astron, Presage, 5 Sports, Lukia and Selection.

Every model shares a common thread: a colourway drawn from edo murasaki, or Edo purple, a dye colour associated with the city's Edo-period merchant culture, paired with gold accents. Seiko frames the design as carrying that heritage from Edo through to present-day Tokyo alongside a continual creative renewal — the same forward-looking positioning the brand generally uses to describe its watchmaking.

The line-up spans genuinely different watchmaking: a mechanical Prospex Alpinist and a solar Speedtimer chronograph, GPS-corrected Astron models, an automatic Presage "Cocktail Time," a 5 Sports SKX diver reissue, a Lukia "Grow" model set with lab-grown diamonds, and a Selection digital-quartz piece. All nine go on sale nationwide from 9 October, Seiko said.

Running one visual idea across watches this different — from a diver's tool watch to a rhinestone-set digital-quartz piece — is less about any single product than about anniversary marketing doing double duty as a brand-wide refresh: a shopper drawn in by one line is, in principle, one purple dial away from noticing five others. Whether a colour reference this specifically domestic travels well with the growing overseas following for lines like Astron and Presage is the more interesting question the anniversary year raises.
