Onward's WEGO opens its first mainland China store, testing Shanghai's Huaihai Road

Onward's youth label WEGO will open its first mainland China store on Shanghai's Huaihai Road in September, converting years of Tmall, Taobao and Xiaohongshu traction and two pop-ups into a permanent lease.

Onward Holdings' youth-fashion label WEGO will open its first bricks-and-mortar store in mainland China on 30 September, on Shanghai's Huaihai Road, the company said in a release dated 22 July. The 187-square-metre store occupies the first floor of a Bailian Group commercial building in the Huangpu district and will trade 10am to 10pm daily.

WEGO chose the site, it said, because Huaihai Road is one of Shanghai's principal shopping streets, where domestic and international brands cluster and the area's fashion-culture-lifestyle identity matches the brand's own positioning.

The store follows two Shanghai pop-ups — one at Jing'an Dayue City in October 2024, another at Wujiao Plaza's Bailian ZX Zaoqu in June 2025 built around itabag (痛バッグ, decorated character bags) — alongside e-commerce sales through Tmall, Taobao, RED (Xiaohongshu) and Douyin, China's TikTok, which the company said have progressed well and built up a customer base. WEGO operates roughly 190 stores across Japan under the slogan "your fan."

The sequence — years of social-commerce traction, two pop-ups, now a lease — looks like a deliberate test rather than a leap. For a mid-market label without a global maison's marketing budget, going physical is a Product and Presentation bet: WEGO's own account frames the store around letting customers handle merchandise and experience its curation directly, which a product feed can't replicate. Whether the Shanghai store stays a solitary showcase or becomes the first of several will say more about the brand's China ambitions than the opening itself.
