ZOZO's ZOZOTOWN keeps growing as discounts and points squeeze its margin

ZOZO's half-year results show its flagship ZOZOTOWN marketplace still taking share from Japan's physical stores, even as deeper discounts and points programmes ate into gross margin and an accounting change made headline sales look weaker than they were.

ZOZO, which runs Japan's biggest fashion e-commerce site, ZOZOTOWN, reported group revenue of ¥110.6 billion for the six months to September 2026, up 5.1% from a year earlier, in the earnings flash (kessan tanshin, 決算短信) it filed with the Tokyo Stock Exchange on 29 October. Operating profit rose 5.6% to ¥32.8 billion and net profit attributable to shareholders rose 3.5% to ¥21.8 billion. Headline gross merchandise value (GMV) — the value of goods sold across all of ZOZO's platforms — fell 1.0% to ¥309.4 billion, but ZOZO said that is an accounting artefact: once stripped of the GMV it stopped booking from Yahoo! Shopping stores after a contract ended in September 2025, the comparable figure actually rose 5.7%.

ZOZOTOWN itself — still more than three-quarters of the group's underlying GMV — grew a steadier 4.4%, to ¥245.9 billion, with revenue (mostly commission on consigned stock) up 4.1% to ¥75.6 billion. The marketplace opened 65 new shops over the half, a net increase of 16 after closures, taking its total to 1,726, including DoCLASSE, a fashion label aimed at shoppers in their forties and fifties, and SABON, the Israeli body-care and bath brand. Annual active buyers rose to 13.56 million, helped by a revived ZOZOWEEK sale event in September that drew in new members.

The no-rent competitor keeps growing, on thinner margin

ZOZOTOWN has no storefronts to lease and no floor staff to pay, which is the comparison department-store and shopping-centre tenants have lived with for years as online fashion retail keeps taking share. Official figures back the direction, if not the scale: nationwide department-store sales rose 1.9% in August, according to METI's Current Survey of Commerce, against ZOZOTOWN's 4.4% over the full April–September half — different periods, but both pointing the same way, with online specialist retail still outgrowing the physical department-store channel it increasingly substitutes for.

What is new is where ZOZO's margin went. Gross profit grew more slowly than the underlying GMV, and the gross-margin ratio slipped 0.4 points to 33.2%, which ZOZO attributed mainly to heavier discounting and points spending on ZOZOTOWN, plus a lower commission rate at Lyst, its global fashion-search platform, now consolidated for a longer stretch of the half than a year earlier. ZOZOTOWN's own average item price still rose 1.6% year on year in the second quarter — roughly in line with the 1.2% rise in Japan's clothing and footwear prices nationally over the same period, Statistics Bureau data show, rather than running ahead of them — so the margin pressure reads as a deliberate trade of price for volume, not an inflation story.

Beyond the marketplace, ZOZO completed its acquisition of High Link, which runs the fragrance platform Kalaria (カラリア), consolidating it from May 2026 as it looks to cross-sell scent products to ZOZOTOWN's existing shoppers. ZOZO also bought back ¥19.2 billion of a planned ¥30 billion share-buyback programme during the half, with the retired shares due for cancellation in January 2027.

None of this moved ZOZO's full-year guidance, left unchanged since April. The read for Japan's physical retailers is unchanged too: ZOZOTOWN's growth is real, even stripped of the accounting noise, but it increasingly looks like growth bought with discounts and points rather than higher prices — a tactic that costs margin to sustain, and leaves less room if Japan's broader pullback in clothing spending, down 8.7% year on year in August, according to the Statistics Bureau, eventually reaches fashion's online aisle too.
