Aeon names a new president for its Myanmar supermarket venture, Aeon Orange

Aeon, Japan's largest retail group, has rotated leadership at its Myanmar supermarket joint venture -- a modest appointment, but a read on how Japan's biggest retailer staffs its ASEAN growth bets.

Aeon Co., Ltd. said it has appointed Nobutada Hanaoka as president of Aeon Orange, the company's Myanmar supermarket joint venture, effective October 21. Hanaoka, born in December 1972, had been on the group's ASEAN business staff since 2022, according to Aeon's release.

Hanaoka joined Jusco, Aeon's predecessor, in 1999 and spent 2013 to 2019 in finance, planning and administration roles at Aeon Big Malaysia, before becoming Aeon Malaysia's chief growth officer and an Aeon Big Malaysia director in 2020. Aeon Orange runs the Orange supermarket chain in Yangon as a joint venture between Aeon and Creation Myanmar Group.

The appointment itself carries no strategic announcement -- Aeon's release states a career history and an effective date, nothing more. But it is still a data point on how Japan's largest retail group staffs the ASEAN businesses it has been building out: a Malaysia-tested executive now runs the supermarket venture in one of the group's smaller and more complicated overseas markets.
