Cake.jp brings its picture-book cookie-can pop-up to Lumine Machida

Online cake retailer Cake.jp is running an 11-day pop-up at Lumine Machida through October 18, selling allergen-free cookie cans themed on picture books such as The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Paddington -- the latest stop for a format the company says has already appeared at more than 50 venues around Japan.

Cake.jp, the Tokyo company behind the online cake and sweets retailer of the same name, is running an 11-day pop-up store at Lumine Machida from October 8 to 18, according to a release from the company.

The stall sits in front of the ticket gates at JR Machida Station, open from 10:30am to 8:30pm, and sells the "Classic Picture Book Cookie Can Selection by Cake.jp," a range of cookie cans each tied to a children's picture book, Cake.jp said. The company said it has already run the format at more than 50 venues nationwide.

The 14 designs on sale, each priced at 3,564 yen including tax, cover titles including Nontan's Birthday, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Paddington and Lisa and Gaspard, the release said. The cookies are free of wheat, egg and dairy, and the cans themselves are designed to be reused as small storage containers once empty, positioned by the company as gifts for souvenirs and everyday occasions. A newer item, a ramune-candy can themed on the picture book Who's There, Knocking? and priced at 1,080 yen including tax, has drawn attention on social media since launch, Cake.jp said.

Cake.jp built its business online -- it counts 2.5 million members and more than 1,700 partner stores on its site, by its own account -- and a pop-up at a station mall like Lumine Machida is a cheap way for a digital-native retailer to put its product in front of commuters who would not otherwise search for it, ahead of the year-end gifting season.
