Cainz brings its home-reform format to a department store floor in Machida

Cainz, a chain built on suburban big-box hardware stores, opened its ninth small-format reform shop inside Odakyu Department Store Machida on 16 September — proof that department stores are filling floor space with tenants far from fashion and luxury.

Cainz opened a consultation-led home-reform shop on the sixth floor of Odakyu Department Store Machida on 16 September, the company said — its ninth "urban small-format" reform location and fifth in Tokyo. The 18.51-tsubo (about 61 square-metre) store sits directly above Machida Station on the Odakyu line and is open from 10am to 8pm.

The Machida shop joins four existing Tokyo locations, including stores in Kokubunji and Koiwa, according to Cainz, as the company — better known for sprawling suburban home centres selling everything from lumber to garden tools — pushes a scaled-down consultation format into denser, transit-linked sites. Cainz said it is targeting 20 such stores nationwide by the end of this fiscal year and a 50-store network by fiscal 2027, though those figures remain the company's own goals rather than confirmed outcomes.

Reform consultation is an unusual anchor for department-store floor space that once went to apparel and household goods, but it fits Odakyu Machida's practical, commuter-driven footfall and fills space fashion tenants have been vacating. If Cainz's pace holds, its reform arm becomes a small but recognisable department-store presence well beyond the DIY chain's usual suburban turf.
