Isetan Mitsukoshi's department stores grow again in August, but not evenly

Isetan Mitsukoshi's domestic department stores grew again in August, led by jewellery and watches and still powered disproportionately by inbound spending — but the gain ranged from a 14.9 per cent jump at Mitsukoshi Nihombashi to just 1.2 per cent at Mitsukoshi Ginza.

Isetan Mitsukoshi Holdings' domestic department stores grew again in August, with group-wide sales up 4.2 per cent year on year, according to the company's own monthly sales disclosure. The gain was far from even across its three Tokyo flagships: Mitsukoshi Nihombashi's main store rose 14.9 per cent, more than ten times the 1.2 per cent posted by Mitsukoshi Ginza.

Isetan Shinjuku, the group's largest single store, grew 7.0 per cent, the company said. Jewellery and watches led the category mix, with luxury handbags and women's apparel holding steady — a high-ticket skew that has become a fixture of the group's monthly reports this year.

The now-familiar split between inbound and domestic spending held. Sales to overseas customers rose 13.3 per cent, more than five times the 2.5 per cent gain from domestic shoppers, Isetan Mitsukoshi said. Inbound demand is still doing more of the work, but domestic spending stayed in positive territory, which is not nothing after a year of yen volatility and patchy consumer sentiment at home.

The more interesting number here is not the headline 4.2 per cent but the spread beneath it. A 14.9 per cent gain at Nihombashi against 1.2 per cent at Ginza is too wide to wave away as noise, and the company's monthly disclosure does not break out a reason for it — whether it reflects renovation timing, category mix, or simply a softer year-earlier comparison at one flagship than the other is a question for next month's figures, not this one.

For a group whose highest-margin floors lean on jewellery and watches performing at both ends of the customer base, the gap between its two Tokyo flagships is the number worth watching when the September report lands.
