Narita Airport reopens its Terminal 1 duty-free hall with an expanded luxury skincare lineup

Japan Airport Building Co. has reopened the JAPAN DUTY FREE North 2 store in Narita's Terminal 1 with a brighter layout and an expanded overseas skincare lineup, concentrating renovation spend on the one duty-free category that travels well regardless of who's flying.

Japan Airport Building Co., the operator of Narita International Airport's terminal buildings, reopened its JAPAN DUTY FREE North 2 store in Terminal 1's north wing on Aug. 11, the company said in a statement announcing a redesigned space it calls "Bright & Flow In."

The renovation adds a brighter, more open entrance and restructures the layout to improve customer circulation and product visibility, according to the release. The more substantive change is on the shelves: the company said it significantly expanded its lineup of overseas luxury skincare brands to address diverse customer needs, though it did not name the additions or disclose the store's floor area.

Narita remains Japan's largest gateway for international arrivals, and the duty-free floors inside its terminals are the last, and sometimes only, retail stop before travellers leave the country.

Skincare is one of the few duty-free categories that travels well regardless of nationality or season — compact, gift-ready and largely immune to the swings that hit apparel and other seasonal lines. Concentrating a renovation budget there, rather than spreading it evenly across the store, is the more defensible bet.
