Nomura Real Estate brings Capella to Tokyo, its second Japan address after Kyoto
A fifth global ultra-luxury hotel house lands in Tokyo, paired with roughly 500 branded residences beside Roppongi Hills — and a four-year wait until the doors open.
Nomura Real Estate said on 30 June it is bringing Capella Hotels and Resorts to Tokyo for the first time, anchoring a 54-storey, roughly 200-metre tower under development in Nishi-Azabu, Minato Ward, near Roppongi Hills. The property is due to open in 2030.
According to the developer, the tower will house an 86-room Capella hotel, including suites, alongside roughly 500 Capella-branded residences that will receive hotel-level concierge service. Two restaurants, a bar lounge, a spa, a fitness gym and banquet facilities round out the programme.
Capella's Tokyo debut follows Capella Kyoto, which Nomura Real Estate says is set to open in March 2026 as the brand's first Japan property. The Singapore-based operator is led by chief executive Roland Fasel and has been named Travel + Leisure's "World's Best Hotel Brand" three years running (2023-2025) — meaning it will hold two Japan addresses within four years of its Kyoto debut.
Tokyo's ultra-luxury hotel count keeps climbing even as each new entrant leans harder on residences to underwrite the low room counts that define the category — 86 keys against roughly 500 apartments is a ratio that says the hotel is as much a brand halo for the homes as a standalone business. For Nomura Real Estate, pairing a globally awarded hospitality name with a scarce Roppongi-adjacent site is a bet that Tokyo residential buyers will pay a premium for a five-star name on the door, not just the address.
