Shiseido's THE GINZA opens its first department-store counter, at Isetan Shinjuku

Shiseido's heritage skincare line THE GINZA — sold until now only through hotel spas and its own online store — is taking its first permanent counter inside a department store, at Isetan Shinjuku, testing whether a slowly built luxury position can hold up against every prestige rival on the floor ahead of its 25th anniversary in 2027.

Shiseido said its prestige skincare brand THE GINZA will open its first-ever permanent department-store counter, inside the Isetan Beauty section of Isetan Shinjuku, planned for winter 2026, according to a company release. The counter arrives ahead of the brand's 25th anniversary in 2027.

Until now THE GINZA's retail footprint has run through channels other than a standing shop floor: spa and amenity partnerships at luxury hotels including Capella Kyoto, and Isetan Beauty Online, which will also carry the brand's full range once the counter opens, the company said.

At Isetan Shinjuku, THE GINZA will offer one-to-one skin counselling and let shoppers try the brand in person, built around two signature formulations: THE GINZA Linden Extract, drawn from linden flower, and an updated THE GINZA Perceptive Complex III, which blends ingredients including ginkgo leaf extract and Angelica keiskei (ashitaba) leaf and stem extract, according to Shiseido.

Kiyomi Horii, representative director of THE GINZA Co., Ltd., the Shiseido group company that runs the brand, said THE GINZA has kept building new points of contact to carry its philosophy and sense of beauty into customers' everyday lives, without being bound by the conventional idea of a cosmetics brand.

Prestige skincare in Japan sells overwhelmingly through the department-store beauty floor, so a 24-year-old brand that has so far kept to hotel spas and its own online store was, by that measure, barely in the market at all. Putting THE GINZA on one of Tokyo's most closely watched beauty floors, at Shiseido's own group home turf, ahead of a milestone anniversary, is a bet that its slower-built luxury positioning can now hold its own on the counter where every rival prestige house is judged — and a test of whether Isetan's shopper will pay attention to a name she has never had to walk past before.
