Korean skincare house Sulwhasoo makes its Japan retail debut at an Isetan Shinjuku pop-up

Amorepacific's prestige skincare brand Sulwhasoo is testing the Japan market with a six-week pop-up inside Isetan Shinjuku's beauty hall, its first full-scale domestic retail run, complete with three Japan-debut products and gifting perks.

Amorepacific Japan said it will open a limited-run pop-up shop for Sulwhasoo, its Korean prestige skincare brand, on the first floor of Isetan Shinjuku's main building, inside the store's beauty and promotion section, running from 5 September to 13 October — the brand's first full-scale retail presence in Japan, according to the company.

Amorepacific traces Sulwhasoo's roots to 1932 and dates the brand itself to 1997, and says this year marks 60 years since its ABC Ginseng Cream — which it describes as the first cosmetic to use Korean ginseng — first went on sale. The pop-up introduces three products making their Japan debut: a Yunjeo First Care Active eye serum (¥11,990) and serum mist (¥6,710), and the Jinseol The Ultimate S skincare series. Isetan will also offer complimentary hand treatments while supplies last, free samples, limited gift sets priced ¥11,000 to ¥27,500, and gift-wrapping and purchase-premium services, the company said.

A pop-up inside Isetan Shinjuku's beauty hall, rather than a drugstore shelf or an e-commerce launch, is itself a positioning statement: it puts Sulwhasoo in the same room as the prestige skincare houses Japanese department stores already vet closely, ahead of any bid for a permanent counter. Whether the brand converts a six-week trial run into that kind of standing floor space will say more about its Japan prospects than the launch products themselves.
