TAG Heuer returns to the Omotesando address where it started, in a redesigned two-floor boutique

TAG Heuer has reopened its Tokyo boutique at 5-8-16 Jingumae, the Omotesando address where its first Japan store opened in 1995 and which it left for Omotesando Hills in 2022 — this time across two floors with its own lounge, a bet that a street-level address still outweighs a mall one.

TAG Heuer has reopened its Tokyo Omotesando boutique at 5-8-16 Jingumae in Shibuya Ward, the address where the Swiss watchmaker opened its first directly operated store in Japan in 1995, according to a release from LVMH Watch & Jewelry Japan dated 4 June announcing the 1 August reopening. The brand had relocated to Omotesando Hills in 2022; the new store returns to what the company calls a symbolically significant location.

The new boutique spans two floors with an open layout and a dedicated lounge, the company said. Its exterior is built around a black colour scheme and a contrast of light and texture; inside, the store is designed to walk clients through TAG Heuer's history alongside its current Carrera, Monaco and Aquaracer collections.

The move is as much about real estate as retail theatre. Omotesando remains one of the few Tokyo streets where a maison's ground-floor address is itself a statement, and reclaiming this one — rather than building out further inside Omotesando Hills — points, in our reading, to a preference for standalone street presence over shopping-centre anchoring. The extra floor and the lounge suggest the space is built for longer, hosted visits rather than passing footfall.
