Birkenstock opens a Shibuya concept store, its 13th directly run shop in Japan
Birkenstock's new Shibuya concept store is its 13th directly run shop in Japan and, following Ikebukuro, Shinsaibashi and Kyoto earlier this year, its fourth concept-format opening in the country in 2026 alone.

Birkenstock opened a concept store in Tokyo's Shibuya district on 1 July, according to a statement from the German footwear maker's own newsroom — its 13th directly operated retail location in Japan.
The store, at 1-20-7 Jinnan and open 11am to 8pm, is also the brand's sixth concept-format store in Japan and, the company said, its fourth this year alone, following openings in Ikebukuro, Shinsaibashi and Kyoto earlier in 2026.
The interior is built around what Birkenstock calls a "Flow" concept, referencing Shibuya's waterways and pedestrian traffic: cross-section tree-trunk benches and fixtures, cork wall finishes, cork shelving shaped to echo the brand's footbed arch, and stainless-steel mesh worked with its signature bone pattern. The shop carries sandals, clogs and shoes from the current collections alongside the premium 1774 line, plus Birkenstock's naturally derived Care Essentials and shoe-care products.
Building the retail theatre a premium push needs
Four concept stores in six months is a fast cadence for a single-category footwear brand, and the format is doing more than moving stock. A cork-and-leather shop with this much material detail is the kind of presentation a brand needs once it starts asking a higher price for its 1774 line — Birkenstock's answer to being seen mainly as a mass-market comfort sandal. It is also a different bet from the Repetto capsule the brand ran at Dover Street Market Ginza earlier this month: that was a short collaboration built for attention, while a permanent, directly run store is infrastructure. Shibuya, built on youth-fashion footfall through buildings like Tokyu Plaza and Parco, is a logical place to put it.
Whether the 1774 line can hold a price above Birkenstock's comfort-sandal reputation will be argued one considered store at a time, rather than at a department-store concession counter.
