Crayon Shinchan Cinema Parade Opens Its First Taiwan Flagship in Taipei's Ximen Underground
A Japan-licensed Crayon Shinchan film-themed retail concept reaches Taipei, marking the brand's first permanent presence outside Japan.

The Crayon Shinchan Cinema Parade concept — a permanent retail format built around the franchise's theatrical film catalogue — has extended beyond Japan for the first time. According to the company, the Taipei flagship opened on 30 July 2026 within the UNDERCITY: XIMEN underground retail complex in the Ximen district of central Taipei, directly connected to the Ximen MRT station. The operator behind the Taiwan venture is a collaboration between local entity FANFANS and Taiwan Sumitomo Corporation, acting under licence from Japanese publisher Futabasha.
The concept's Japanese trajectory offers useful context. The company states that the original permanent location launched in 2022 at Sunshine City in Ikebukuro, Tokyo, to mark the franchise's thirtieth anniversary of theatrical releases. Subsequent pop-up iterations followed in several Japanese cities, and a second permanent Japanese store opened in November 2025 at Canal City Hakata in Fukuoka. The Taiwan opening therefore represents the third permanent site globally and the first outside Japan, suggesting a measured, evidence-tested rollout rather than an opportunistic leap.
From a retail-format standpoint, the store positions itself at the intersection of IP merchandise and experiential retail. The company describes a curated interior in which scenes from across the franchise's film history — spanning what it characterises as 33 years of theatrical releases — are physically recreated, including life-sized character figures. Among the installations noted are a full-scale reproduction of the character Robo-Dad and figures of the villains Makao and Joma from the film 'Henderland no Daiboken'. Hundreds of directly imported Japanese official merchandise lines are stocked, covering stationery, household goods, interior accessories, and collector items.
A near-term commercial hook is the advance sale of merchandise tied to the 2026 theatrical release 'Eiga Crayon Shinchan: Kiki Kaikei! Ora no Yokai Bake-shon', which the company says will be available at the Taipei store ahead of other Taiwan retail channels. Pre-release merchandise exclusivity is a well-established traffic driver in Japanese IP retail, and its application here signals that the Taipei operation is being managed with the same promotional rhythm as its Japanese counterparts rather than receiving a delayed, secondary allocation.
What to watch: the Ximen underground venue targets a young, transit-oriented consumer base, and the MRT adjacency will be a natural footfall driver. For foreign brand heads and licensing professionals, the more instructive question is whether this Futabasha-sanctioned model — a locally operated JV with a regional trading house as co-venturer — becomes a replicable template for further Asian markets. A further data point to monitor is dwell time and average transaction value relative to the Japanese permanent stores; if those figures are disclosed in subsequent operator communications, they will indicate how closely the Taiwanese fan base mirrors the spending behaviour that justified the Fukuoka expansion.
